CPR Online

Spotlight: Joelle Caputa, Employee of the Month – July 2011

Where did you earn your degree?
I earned my Bachelor of Arts at William Paterson University of New Jersey.

What was your major?
I majored in Communication, focusing on journalism, PR and music business.

Previous experience…
This all stems back from my high school journalism teacher. She ate peanut butter straight from the jar and never let the staff of our paper (I was photography editor) write about anything fun. I was naturally jealous (about the peanut butter) and determined to start my own publishing revolution. My senior year, I landed a spot as a reporter on the News Team for Teen People magazine (RIP). In college, I was entertainment editor of The Beacon Weekly for four years and also launched an environmental section, Eco Lounge. While working towards my degree, I also launched two companies: Planet Verge, a print music zine (which has evolved into a blog and Internet TV show) and Audio Crush PR. As a publicist, I have had the privilege of working with some of my favorite music makers like Cash Cash (Universal Republic). The Audio Crush roster has included acclaimed burgeoning acts from the USA (the Matches) and UK (Sohodolls). The company’s campaigns have brought clients to the attention of major labels (The Parlor Mob signed to Capitol Records; Val Emmich to Bluhammock Music) and landed them on vital outlets including AOL Radio, The New York Times, NYLON TV and theStream.tv. After graduating, I spent a few years at a small music company, holding multiple roles simultaneously- including editor, publicist and sponsorship coordinator. I’ve also freelanced for Venus Zine, worked as a casting recruiter for Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog, spent time as an A&R scout for a record label and launched a music TV show on the campus of WPU.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?
Every time I reach a goal, I consider it a success. Last year, the band 30 Seconds to Mars came on my TV show and then wrote about it in their official newsletter. Never in a million years would I have predicted that Jared Leto would be on an Internet TV show I started. More recently, I landed my Audio Crush clients Cash Cash as featured music on the trailer and episode 1 for Jersey Shore Season 4. I’m pretty stoked about both those scores.

How did you motivate yourself to get to where you are now?
“Stop dreaming, start something” is my motto. It’s a lyric from my favorite band Lostprophets. I’m not one to sit around and wait for something to happen. I make my reality. I really love making a difference, whether it’s introducing people to their new favorite band or convincing them to adopt a shelter dog and help save the tigers.

My favorite thing to do is take my dogs on walks. I dabble in photography and graphic design. I’m also writing my first book.

Who are your mentors? Jane Pratt. I love her writing style and vision. JANE magazine inspired me while I was launching Planet Verge. And Oprah!

What is the best thing about working at CPR?
CPR is my leap into healthcare. It’s a brand new world and I love it. I’m a rice milk drinking, tree hugging, health-conscious vegetarian, so this fits me quite nicely. But work is all about the people you spend hours of your day with and we are a tight-knit crew at CPR. I love coming here everyday and working with friends!

Any funny work stories you can share?
People laugh at me a lot. But I’m just being normal. I know that’s not a funny story.
