Sounds like an oxy-moron doesn’t it? How can you beat the heat by exercising when it does just the opposite? The summer is actually the best time of the year to part take in one of the most rewarding exercises for your mind and body while escaping the heat. Can you guess what it is?
If you guessed swimming, you are correct! There are numerous reasons why swimming is a great exercise for someone to participate in, no matter what age.
Since our bodies are naturally less dense than water, there isn’t much we have to do to stay afloat. Because of this, swimming doesn’t have as much of an impact on the joints as other exercises, like pounding the pavement when running. No more shin splints!
Slow and steady swimming requires a lot of energy to be used from the body. This would be considered a low-impact aerobic exercise that will keep your heart rate up for a prolonged period of time and will burn a ton of fat! That doesn’t sound too rigorous, does it? In addition to burning calories and fat, swimming works every single muscle in the body giving you the long, lean, and toned body of an Olympic swimmer that we all dream about (helloooo Michael Phelps!).
Other benefits of swimming include: improving blood pressure, flexibility, posture, low-risk of injury and stress reduction.
Here are the steps of the four different strokes you can try to get started. Start out slow and you will increase your speed and stamina in no time. It’s important not to get discouraged when starting a workout regimen. Everyone starts somewhere!
