Alliance Life Sciences Launches First-of-its-Kind Study to Examine the Effectiveness of Copay Offset Cards

Study to highlight attitudes and experiences of patients, pharmacists, physicians and payers regarding offset of prescription cost-share for patients

SOMERSET, N.J. – July 23, 2012– Alliance Life Sciences Consulting Group (ALSCG), a leading management and technology consultancy, today announces the launch of a study to examine the effectiveness of copay offset cards to assess the attitudes and experiences of patients, pharmacists, physicians and payers.  Pharmaceutical companies provide offset cards to reduce or eliminate patient copays, with a growing number of companies offering these cards to employees/plan members.

Interviews and online surveys will occur between August and October of 2012, and the final report will be released in November. For more information visit: www.alscg.com/company/events/copay

“As we approach 2013, many pharmaceutical companies are reviewing their copay card programs, and making decisions regarding whether to continue, discontinue or modify them,” says Mohan Purushothaman, executive vice president at ALSCG. “Our goal in conducting this study is to gather previously unavailable qualitative and quantitative information that will serve to facilitate the decision-making process.”

By reducing the amount of copay due from patients for prescriptions, copay offset cards reduce the amount of outlay required for patients. By increasing affordability, the cards increase adherence and persistency among patients. Some payers, however, believe the cards promote the use of expensive brand name drugs when less expensive, generic alternatives are available.

“The depth of this research will be comprehensive and contain deep insights,” Purushothaman adds. “While payer opinions are likely to contrast those of patients, pharmacists and physicians, the payer influence in the marketplace will carry special significance. Based upon the combined information, pharmaceutical marketers will be empowered with information to make crucial modifications in the scope, handling and promotion of copay offset cards.”
